Anxiety related to COVID-19 vaccines is common due to uncertainties surrounding their development and potential side effects. However, it is important to explain that safety measures were not compromised, multiple vaccine options were explored simultaneously, and the vaccines underwent rigorous safety and efficacy testing. Remind them that temporary side effects, like those of the flu shot, may occur but indicate that the vaccine is working effectively. Let them know that serious and long-term side effects are rare, and the risks of not getting vaccinated outweigh the minimal risks associated with the vaccine. Sometimes people have fears about needles, or deeper mistrust of the medical system. People with a lot of fear and anxiety about getting a vaccine can start by talking to their provider and letting them know about their fears. If their explanations and reassurance do not help, a provider may suggest seeking help from a mental health care provider to learn about ways to manage anxiety.
